2017 - Design in Review
Product Design Melbourne

2017 is nearing its end, and what a year it has been! We’ve worked on some incredible products that we can’t wait to see hit the market in 2018. We have also had some wonderful past designs launch, and we’ve had projects pick up awards across the globe.

It has also been a big year within Bayly. A lot of our energy in 2017 has been focussed on customer needs. Identifying and understanding a customer’s needs is the most crucial component of any successful design projectNot only have we been educating ourselves in the best ways to do this, we have also run workshops for clients and the publicThis has been done to help others understand the importance of knowing their customer’s needs. Family values have also been a focus of the year for us. We have learnt to take pride in the fact that we are, and always have been, a family owned business. Values such as teamwork, collaboration, and building relationships that go beyond dollars for services are a core part of how we do business.

2017 Product Design Trends

At the start of 2017 we made some predictions. IoT smart control would continue to increase. Augmented reality would gain a greater foothold. Drones would move well beyond the realms of toys.

Deutsche Telekom definitely deserve credit for one of the most innovative uses of augmented reality in 2017DT’s primary brand colour is magenta, and as part of an marketing campaign they turned every magenta surface into an AR display. Check it out HERE.

Professional use of drones hasn’t moved far beyond photography despite Amazon’s best efforts. GoPro hasn’t fared much better with major recalls on their Karma drone. In better news for drones, many beach goers this summer in Australia may be able to look to the skies and spot drones, sent out to keep them safe from sharks.

2017 Events and Presentations

Melbourne may be the design capital of Australia, but we travelled to events well beyond our borders in 2017As well as attending great local events such as Melbourne Design Week and the Premier’s Design Awards, we also headed north to the Good Design Awards in Sydney, and further still, to the truly unique Business of Design Week in Hong Kong.

In the interests of educating our clients and friends, we also ran our own events for the first time in 2017. Bayly hosted in person and online talks relating to understanding customer needs. We also had a great time interacting with a broad array of passionate individuals while speaking on the topic at Make-Create.

Product Design Success

We always love to see our clients succeed, their success is the purpose of our business. It was very exciting to see a range of products that we worked on launching in the last 12 months. We congratulate FoalAppJuju and Tushon for launching new products to the market. Products that we have worked on have also received a swathe of awards at home and internationally. Nutrapress and Aqua Botanical took out prizes at the Zenith Innobev Awards. Airbolt took out Product Design and Consumer Electronics awards at the Good Design AwardsThe YMCA Playnasium has also received a huge response this year, taking out awards in 7 different advertising competitionsit also took home both the Product Design and overall Premier’s Design Awards category wins earlier this month.

Congratulations

Congratulations to all of our clients who have put in the hard yards to launch new products this year.  Congratulations also to all those who have made the decision to develop new products in the last 12 months.  We have been working on some very exciting projects for some very clever people and we can't wait to share them with you all once they are released.
